D.A.R.E Program

History and Nationwide Implementation of D.A.R.E.

The Drug Abuse Resistance  Education (D.A.R.E.) program was founded in 1983 in Los Angeles, California, by the LAPD and the Los Angeles Unified School District. Its primary goal was to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to resist peer pressure, avoid drugs and alcohol,  and make healthy life choices. The program initially began as a response to rising concerns about youth drug use and gang violence in urban areas.

By the 1980’s D.A.R.E. expanded rapidly throughout the United States as schools, law enforcement agencies and communities recognized the need for comprehensive educational programs that could empower youth to make positive decisions. The program was unique in its approach, incorporating law enforcement officers as instructors and offering interactive lessons that covered not only the dangers of drugs but also skills for handling conflict, building self-esteem, and making safe decisions.
